Alyson Myers, Ph.D.

Dr. Alyson Myers is a Bahamian researcher with a well-rounded scientific background. She graduated from St. Andrew’s International School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in psychology and biology from Florida Atlantic University where she was involved in Elasmobranch research, specifically batoid kinetics and locomotion. Alyson also earned her master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University in Experimental Psychology, specializing in Marine Mammal Ethology and Comparative/Evolutionary Psychology.

Her graduate research was conducted with The Wild Dolphin Project studying wild Atlantic Spotted Dolphins in the waters of Bimini and Grand Bahama. She led field research trips aboard the R/V Stenella collecting environmental, behavioural, and genetic data. Alyson has a number of publications in various journals and textbooks, including her research: Synchrony during aggression in adult male Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella Frontalis), published in Acta Ethologica. Her research has also been presented at various conferences including the Abaco Science Alliance Conference and the Society for Marine Mammalogy Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals.

During her Ph.D. studies, she also consulted on a nutrient pollution mitigation project using Bahamian oolitic aragonite. This project won Stage 1, Phase 2 of the George Barley Water Prize hosted by The Everglades Foundation. Alyson has since been focused on oolitic aragonite, conducting a life cycle analysis, carbon footprint analysis and biogenic content testing to expand our understanding and knowledge of this unique biogenic mineral found in The Bahamas. Alyson is engaged in developing a carbon credit protocol for oolitic aragonite to help benefit The Bahamas.
