Dr. Carlton Watson

Director

Dr. Carlton Watson has been a member of faculty at University of The Bahamas (UB) since August 2003. An Associate Professor in Physics, he has served the institution as Dean of Pure and Applied Sciences (2014-2021), School Chair (2008-2012) and Head of Department (2013-2014).

An experimental condensed matter physicists by training, he conducts research in wide-ranging areas including semiconductors, clean energy and climate, and open and distance learning. He formerly served as Senior Research Scientist and Manager of the Microfabrication Unit at TLC Precision Wafer Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he developed processes to fabricate next generation, high-frequency microchips. 

He currently serves as Interim Executive Director of The Small Island Sustainability Research Complex with responsibility for Small Island Sustainability Programmes in Marine Sciences, Sustainable Agriculture and Ecotourism. He also oversees the development of UB laboratories to support sustainability and climate research. He has contributed on many institutional and Bahamian national committees and task forces integral to national development.

He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from The University of Iowa (2001) and a BSc. in Physics from Prairie View A&M University (1994).
